The pilot mapping of the settlements/camps in the Municipality of Spata-Artemidos was successfully completed. Applying the methodology designed through the Roma Platform 2020 project, the Municipality in question was chosen from the perspective that it includes many types of settlements that belong to the typology of the different types of living of the Roma population and would eloquently highlight the problems and challenges that hinder the active participation and social inclusion of the Roma.
The aim was to find the best method of mapping the demographic characteristics and living conditions of the Roma living in the selected area in order to determine the needs of the members of the target group and, consequently, the formulation of policies that will serve these needs.
The Municipality of Spata-Artemidos was chosen from the perspective that it includes many types of settlements that belong to the typology of the different types of living of the Roma population and would eloquently highlight the problems and challenges that hinder the active participation and social integration of the Roma.
Thus, indicative findings of the pilot application concerned the percentage of settlements/camps inside/outside the urban plan, access to basic living infrastructure, population data (age, gender, education, employment, marriages and childbearing 13-18, disabled) but also to provide information on the active participation and social inclusion of the Roma.
The evaluation of the pilot mapping was positive. No major difficulties were encountered during it and the approach taken by the mapping form was described as ‘holistic’. Its result was the proposal for the use of qualitative methodological tools through ad hoc research in selected topics as well as the need to adopt clear definitions for concepts included in the mapping form.
Based on these findings, systematic mapping and special researches are considered necessary on a permanent basis.
